Hey everybody! As most of you have noticed we don't really have a "main game" anymore, or at least one in the FPS genera. So I figured I would turn your attention to a game that is actually pretty epic. Red Orchestra 2, and Rising Storm. They are essentially the same game, which is a WW2 strategy biased first person shooter. I actually made a review a while ago when RO2 first game out, and back then it was pretty bad. It really belonged in beta, however since the released Rising Storm I decided to give it another shot.
Red Orchestra takes place in the Eastern Front with the Russian and German Factions. Rising Storm is in the Pacific with the American and Japanese. I was able to play some of the RS maps because I owned RO2, they are fairly large and very fun to play. The main game type I have been playing is Territory. Territory is similar to Domination, however one side is defending and another is attacking. There are usually between 4 and 8 areas to fight over. Typically there will be two unlocked points at any given time which the attacking team must capture and hold. Both points must be held to continue advancing.
Aside from basic run and gun action (which will actually get you killed, using cover and team work is necessary to win) you have squad leaders, and a team commander. This makes the game different from COD and Battle Field all though it is a lot closer to Battle Field in the mechanics of the game ad how it plays.
A squad leader is in command of a large number of players, I want to say 10 but it may be more. They are able to spot targets for artillery strikes and direct the squads fire teams to be the most affective. This helps the team to be more organized and hold and capture critical points to win the battle. You do not have to follow your leaders commands but it typically helps.
The commander is the main guy for the team. All though the squad leaders can designate targets for Arty, the commander has to chose weather or not to fire on the locations. He will have several abilities he can use with cool downs to prevent spam. They are similar to Kill Streaks from COD but they are impossible to spam since only one person per team can use them and they have long cool downs. A good commander can decide a battle. I played one game where the commander was really good, and gave good direction to the team, and we were able to sweep the enemy fairly easily and win battle after battle.
Both Games are $20 on steam. If you own Red Orchestra 2 you will get a $5 discount on Rising Storm. As far as I know they do not require the other to run but I recommend getting RO2 first. You can play the Rising Storm maps with only owning Red Orchestra 2 but you can only play as a Rifle Man so no leading the teams, and you will not gain XP. Over all great game, with a great price tag. I would love to play with you guys!
